Meet Our Richmond Hill Chiropodist
Vajiheh Hamifar D.CH
Registered Chiropodist
Chiropody at our Richmond Hill clinic is led by Vajiheh (Vaji) Hamifar, D.Ch, a Registered Chiropodist with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. Vaji trained at the Michener Institute of Education at UHN, the program that educates chiropodists in this province, and had already qualified as a medical doctor in Iran before turning her focus to the foot and ankle.
She assesses, treats, and manages both acute and chronic conditions of the feet and lower limbs: arch pain, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, bunions, ingrown toenails, flat feet, calluses, corns, warts, neuromas, and sport-related injuries. Custom orthotics are central to her practice, and she also advises on footwear and, where it’s appropriate, prescribes medication and carries out the minor procedures within a chiropodist’s scope. Her goal is a practical one: sort out the foot problems that get in the way of everyday life, work, and activity.

Chiropody and What a Chiropodist Does
Chiropody is the area of health care focused on the foot and ankle: working out what’s wrong, treating it, and keeping it from coming back. Chiropodists are primary care providers who complete years of post-secondary training, supervised clinical placements, and licensing exams before they can practise in Ontario, where they’re regulated by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. You don’t need a referral from a family doctor to book.
Our Richmond Hill chiropodist handles the full range of foot care, from nail and skin work to gait analysis, custom orthotics, minor soft-tissue procedures, and prescription medication for certain foot conditions. Care is matched to what you actually need, whether that’s managing a long-term condition like diabetes or getting back on your feet after a sports injury.
Conditions We Treat with Chiropody
Our chiropody service in Richmond Hill covers a broad range of foot and lower limb problems.
Heel and Arch Pain
Heel pain often traces back to plantar fasciitis, an irritation of the tissue band running along the sole of the foot that tends to bite hardest with your first steps in the morning. Our chiropodist looks at the mechanics behind it and builds a plan that might include stretching, taping, footwear changes, and custom orthotics. Heel spurs, bony growths on the underside of the heel bone, are assessed and managed along the same lines.
Ingrown Toenails
When a toenail grows into the skin beside it, the result is pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. Conservative care clears many cases. For stubborn or recurring ones, our chiropodist can perform minor nail surgery under local anaesthetic and take steps to stop it happening again.
Bunions and Toe Deformities
A bunion is the bony bump that develops at the base of the big toe, and it can make footwear uncomfortable and walking painful. We assess how far it has progressed, suggest footwear that takes pressure off, and use padding, splinting, or orthotics to ease symptoms and slow it down.
Corns, Calluses, and Skin Conditions
Corns and calluses build up where the skin takes repeated pressure or friction, and they can turn painful if left alone. Our chiropodist removes them safely and, just as important, addresses the mechanical cause so they don’t keep returning. We also treat plantar warts, athlete’s foot, and other skin conditions of the foot.
Diabetic Foot Care
Diabetes can reduce circulation and dull sensation in the feet, which raises the risk of ulcers and infections that are slow to heal. Regular diabetic foot assessments, checking circulation and nerve function, caring for skin and nails, and catching problems early, are among the most valuable things a chiropodist does. The College of Chiropodists of Ontario has pointed to better access to foot care as key to reducing diabetes-related lower-limb amputations.
Flat Feet and Biomechanical Issues
Flat feet, overpronation, and high arches change how load moves through the foot, and the effects can turn up further along the chain: ankles, knees, hips, even the lower back. A gait analysis and biomechanical exam pinpoint what’s happening, and treatment usually involves some mix of custom orthotics, footwear adjustments, and targeted exercises.
Fungal Nail Infections
Thick, discoloured, or crumbling toenails can point to a fungal infection. Our chiropodist can confirm the diagnosis and treat it with topical or oral antifungals, along with debridement to thin the nail and make it more comfortable.
Sports-Related Foot Injuries
Runners, hikers, and weekend athletes in Richmond Hill come to our chiropodist for injuries like stress fractures, Achilles tendinopathy, and metatarsalgia. Where a foot problem is part of a larger movement issue, we line up care with our physiotherapy team so nothing falls through the cracks. There’s more on this in our guide to preventing and treating sports injuries.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropody in Richmond Hill
Do I need a referral to see a chiropodist?
No. Chiropodists are primary care providers, so you can book directly. Some insurance plans do ask for a referral before they’ll reimburse, so it’s worth checking yours.
What happens at your first appointment?
Your first visit starts with a full assessment: your health history, current medications, and the concern that brought you in, followed by a hands-on exam of your feet and lower limbs, covering skin, nails, circulation, nerve function, joint movement, and strength. If gait or structure is part of the picture, we add a biomechanical assessment. From there, our chiropodist explains what’s going on and sets out a treatment plan, and treatment often begins the same day.
Is chiropody covered by insurance?
Chiropody isn’t covered by OHIP for most patients, but many extended health benefit plans include it. Contact your provider to confirm your specific coverage.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your insurance details, a list of current medications, any relevant records or imaging, and the shoes you wear most often. Loose pants that roll up past the knee make it easier to assess your lower limbs.
Where is chiropody available in Richmond Hill?
At our Richmond Hill clinic, 9325 Yonge Street, Unit #8. Physiotherapy and registered massage therapy are also offered at this location.
Can a chiropodist prescribe medication?
Yes. Under the Chiropody Act, 1991, chiropodists in Ontario can prescribe designated oral, topical, and injectable medications to treat foot conditions.
