Not everyone can make it to a clinic. Maybe you’re recovering from a knee replacement and stairs are still a challenge. Maybe your parent lives alone in Woodbridge and doesn’t drive. Or maybe you’re juggling work, kids, and a back injury that won’t quit.
That’s where in-home physiotherapy comes in. At Helping Hands Physiotherapy & Massage, our Registered Physiotherapists bring the same assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation you’d receive in our clinics, directly to your door throughout Vaughan and surrounding communities.
How It Works
In-home physiotherapy is exactly what it sounds like: a licensed physiotherapist comes to your home, evaluates your condition, and delivers hands-on treatment in your own space. Your living room, bedroom, or any comfortable area becomes the treatment room.
Our physiotherapists bring the equipment they need, resistance bands, portable treatment tools, and anything required for your specific condition. You don’t need to buy anything or set up a home gym. They’ll also incorporate what’s already in your environment, which is actually one of the biggest advantages. Exercises practised on your staircase, in your hallway, and beside your bed translate directly to the movements you need to do every day.
Your first visit follows the same structure as an in-clinic initial assessment: a detailed conversation about your symptoms and health history, a physical examination, a working diagnosis, and a treatment plan with clear goals. Follow-up sessions focus on hands-on treatment, exercise progression, and education, just like they would at our Woodbridge or Thornhill locations.
Who Benefits Most
In-home physiotherapy isn’t only for people who can’t leave the house. It’s a practical option for anyone who would benefit from receiving care in their own environment.
Post-surgical patients are among the most common. After a hip or knee replacement, getting in and out of a car and travelling to a clinic can be painful and logistically difficult in those first few weeks. Research published in PLOS ONE found that home-based exercise programmes after hip fracture surgery led to significant improvements in balance, walking speed, and quality of life, comparable to outpatient clinic results. Starting rehab early at home helps bridge the gap between hospital discharge and when you’re mobile enough for clinic visits.
Seniors and older adults benefit from the comfort and safety of staying home, especially those managing conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or balance issues. Our physiotherapists can also assess your home for fall risks, loose rugs, poor lighting, grab bar placement, and build those observations into your treatment plan. Ontario residents aged 65 and older may also be eligible for government-funded in-home physiotherapy through Ontario Health at Home.
People with mobility limitations due to chronic pain, neurological conditions, or temporary injuries often find that the physical effort of getting to a clinic defeats the purpose. Removing that barrier means you can put your energy into the treatment itself.
Busy professionals and parents sometimes just need the convenience. No commute, no waiting room, no disruption to your day beyond the session itself. If fitting physiotherapy into your schedule has been the main reason you haven’t started, a home visit might be the solution.
What We Treat at Home
Our in-home physiotherapy covers the same scope as our clinic-based services. Common conditions include:
- Post-surgical rehabilitation (joint replacements, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair)
- Lower back pain and neck pain
- Sports injuries and strains
- Osteoarthritis and joint pain
- Balance and gait disorders
- Neurological conditions (stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease)
- Chronic pain management
Treatment includes manual therapy, therapeutic exercise prescription, patient education, and a home exercise programme tailored to your space and ability level.
Our Service Area
We provide in-home physiotherapy across Vaughan, including areas near our Woodbridge physiotherapy clinic, Vellore Village, Maple, and Concord, as well as Brampton and communities near our Thornhill physiotherapy clinic. If you’re unsure whether your area is covered, give us a call and we’ll let you know.
Insurance and Cost
In-home physiotherapy sessions are billed as physiotherapy, which means they’re covered by most extended health insurance plans. We offer direct billing to most major providers, so there’s minimal paperwork on your end. For details on what physiotherapy costs in Ontario and how insurance coverage works, see our guide on physiotherapy costs.
You also don’t need a doctor’s referral. Under Ontario’s direct access model, you can self-refer to a physiotherapist at any time.
