Walking into a physiotherapy clinic for the first time can feel uncertain, especially if you’ve never been assessed before. At Helping Hands Physiotherapy & Massage, we want to take the guesswork out of it.
Here’s a step-by-step look at what your first visit involves at our Woodbridge and Thornhill locations.
Before Your Appointment
A little preparation goes a long way. Here’s how to make the most of your first visit:
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete any intake forms, provide your insurance information, and fill out a health questionnaire.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy movement. You may be asked to walk, squat, or move your arms and legs during the assessment. For more detail, check out our guide on what to wear to physiotherapy.
- Bring any relevant documents, this includes imaging reports (X-rays, MRIs), a doctor’s referral if you have one, and a list of any medications you’re currently taking.
- Write down your questions. Your physiotherapist will make time to answer them, so don’t hesitate to come prepared.
Good news: in Ontario, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to book physiotherapy through direct access. You can self-refer at any time.
During Your Initial Assessment
Your first appointment is longer than a follow-up, typically 45 to 60 minutes. It’s structured around three main components:
1. Your Health History
Your physiotherapist will start with a conversation. They’ll ask about your current symptoms (when they started, what makes them better or worse), your medical history, your daily activities, your occupation, and your goals for treatment. This subjective history helps build a complete picture of your condition before any physical testing begins.
2. The Physical Examination
Next comes a hands-on assessment. Depending on your condition, this may include testing your range of motion, strength, flexibility, posture, gait (how you walk), joint mobility, and reflexes. Your physiotherapist may also use palpation, gentle touch to assess the affected area, to identify sources of pain or dysfunction.
In Ontario, the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO) requires that your physiotherapist obtain your informed consent before beginning any assessment or treatment. This means they’ll explain what they’re going to do, why, and give you the opportunity to ask questions or decline any part of the process. You’re always in control.
3. Your Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Based on what they’ve found, your physiotherapist will explain their clinical impression, what’s likely causing your symptoms and what structures are involved. They’ll then outline a recommended treatment plan, including what types of treatment they suggest (such as manual therapy, exercise prescription, or education), how often they’d like to see you, and a realistic timeline for your goals.
Most patients also receive some hands-on treatment or initial exercises during this first visit, so you won’t leave empty-handed.
After Your First Visit
It’s normal to feel some mild soreness in the 24-48 hours following your assessment, particularly if physical tests or manual techniques were performed. This is temporary and not a sign that anything has worsened.
Before you leave, you’ll typically:
- Book your follow-up appointments. These are usually 30-45 minutes and focused on treatment.
- Receive a home exercise programme. The work you do between sessions is a key part of your recovery. Even 10–15 minutes a day can make a significant difference.
- Have clarity on your plan. You should leave knowing what’s wrong, what the plan is, and what role you play in your own recovery.
Your Rights as a Patient
Understanding your rights can help you feel more confident walking in. Under Ontario’s Health Care Consent Act, you have the right to:
- Receive a clear explanation of any proposed treatment, including its benefits, risks, and alternatives
- Ask questions and receive honest answers
- Refuse or withdraw consent at any time
- Access your health records
Your physiotherapist is legally and professionally required to respect these rights at every stage of your care. This isn’t just policy, it’s how we practise at Helping Hands Physiotherapy.
What Makes Our First Visit Different
At Helping Hands Physiotherapy, your initial assessment is always one-on-one with a Registered Physiotherapist. We don’t pass you off to an assistant for your first visit or rush you through a 20-minute intake. We take the time to listen, assess thoroughly, and explain everything clearly, because a strong assessment is the foundation of an effective treatment plan.
