What to Wear to Physiotherapy: The Right Outfit for Your Physio Appointment (And What to Avoid)

Preparing for your first physiotherapy appointment can bring up practical questions, and one of the most common is: “What should I wear?” The clothing you choose can significantly impact the effectiveness of your treatment and your overall comfort during the session. At Helping Hands Physiotherapy & Massage, we want you to feel prepared and confident when you walk through our doors in Woodbridge or Thornhill.

The right attire allows our Registered Physiotherapists to properly assess your condition, access the treatment area, and guide you through therapeutic exercises with ease. Let’s break down everything you need to know about dressing for your physiotherapy appointment.

Why Your Clothing Matters for Physiotherapy

Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for a full range of motion during exercises and stretches enables your therapist to access and examine the affected area easily. Your clothing choice directly affects our ability to conduct a thorough assessment, observe your movement patterns, and deliver effective hands-on treatment.

When you arrive in restrictive or inappropriate clothing, it can limit the scope of your assessment and treatment. Our physiotherapists need to see how your body moves, evaluate your posture, and apply manual therapy techniques to specific areas. The right clothing makes this process seamless and comfortable for everyone involved.

General Guidelines: What to Wear to Physiotherapy

Choose Comfort and Flexibility

Opt for comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement, such as athletic wear including t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, or yoga pants, while avoiding jeans, dress clothes, or anything too tight or constricting. Think about what you’d wear to the gym – if it works for a workout, it likely works for physiotherapy.

The best fabrics are breathable and stretchy materials like cotton, spandex, or moisture-wicking athletic wear. These fabrics move with your body and won’t become uncomfortable during your session.

Dress in Layers

Dressing in layers is recommended, allowing you to adjust to temperature changes during your session, such as wearing a t-shirt or tank top with a light jacket or sweatshirt that can be easily removed. Physiotherapy can be physically active, and you may warm up as you move through exercises. Layers give you the flexibility to stay comfortable throughout your appointment.

Don’t Forget Your Footwear

Sneakers, flat shoes, or athletic shoes are best as they provide the necessary support and stability for various exercises and movements during therapy, while open-toe shoes, heels, boots, and sandals should be avoided. Proper footwear is essential for safety during exercise-based treatment and functional assessments.

We also recommend bringing clean, comfortable socks, especially if you need to remove your shoes for specific exercises or assessments.

Clothing Recommendations by Treatment Area

Different injuries and treatment areas require specific clothing considerations. Here’s what we recommend for common physiotherapy appointments at our Vaughan locations.

Shoulder, Neck, or Upper Back Issues

For upper body treatments, wearing a tank top with a loose sweater that can be removed if needed is recommended, as this allows the physiotherapist to access the area while providing coverage and warmth when not being treated. Women may prefer sports bras or tank tops that allow shoulder movement. Men often feel comfortable removing their shirts if necessary, though we also have gowns available if needed.
If you have long hair, bring a hair tie to keep it away from the treatment area during your session.

Lower Back and Hip Pain

For back or hip pain, loose-fitting shirts and comfortable but loose pants that can be easily lowered to show the lowest part of the back are recommended. Pants with elastic waistbands work particularly well, as they can be adjusted slightly for your physiotherapist to examine your lower spine and surrounding muscles.

Tank tops or loose t-shirts allow easy access to your upper and middle back while keeping you comfortable throughout the assessment and treatment.

Knee, Ankle, or Foot Injuries

For knee, ankle, or foot injuries, mid-length shorts or loose cropped pants that can be rolled up to expose the knee while still allowing good range of motion are ideal. Your physiotherapist needs full visibility of your knee and lower leg to assess movement patterns, observe alignment, and deliver effective treatment.

Shorts are generally the most practical option for lower body treatments, though loose athletic pants that roll up easily can also work well.

What to Avoid Wearing to Physiotherapy

Certain clothing items and accessories can interfere with your treatment. Here’s what to leave at home or avoid wearing to your appointment:

  • Restrictive Clothing: Tight jeans, fitted business clothes, heavy sweaters, and turtlenecks limit movement and make assessment difficult.
  • Dresses and Skirts: These don’t provide adequate coverage during exercises and movements, unless you wear shorts underneath.
  • Excessive Jewelry: Jewelry such as necklaces or bracelets can cause obstacles during physiotherapy sessions, potentially hindering the treatment process and interfering with the therapist’s ability to work effectively. Remove necklaces, dangling earrings, bracelets, and watches before your session.
  • Inappropriate Footwear: Avoid sandals, flip-flops, high heels, and boots. These compromise your balance and safety during therapeutic exercises.
  • Belts and Restrictive Accessories: These can limit movement and make certain treatments uncomfortable or less effective.

Coming from Work? Plan Ahead

We understand that many patients come directly from work or other commitments. If you’re heading to your appointment in business attire, we recommend bringing a change of clothes. Pack comfortable athletic wear in a small bag so you can change before your session. This ensures you get the maximum benefit from your treatment without your work clothes interfering.

What to Bring to Your Physiotherapy Appointment

Beyond appropriate clothing, consider bringing these items to make your session more comfortable and productive:

  • Water bottle to stay hydrated, especially during active treatment sessions
  • Towel for exercises or if you tend to perspire during physical activity
  • Any relevant medical documents, including referrals, imaging results, or surgical reports
  • List of current medications for our records
  • Questions or concerns you’d like to discuss with your physiotherapist

Your First Appointment: What to Expect

During your initial physiotherapy visit at Helping Hands Physiotherapy in Woodbridge or Thornhill locations, we conduct a comprehensive assessment that includes reviewing your medical history, discussing your pain or injury, and performing physical tests to evaluate your movement, strength, and limitations. This assessment guides us in developing a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Wearing the appropriate clothing ensures we can complete this assessment thoroughly and begin your treatment effectively from the very first session.

Making the Most of Your Physiotherapy Sessions

Proper attire is just one aspect of getting the most from your physiotherapy treatment. We also encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to change if needed and mentally prepare for your session, communicate openly with your physiotherapist about any discomfort or concerns, follow your home exercise program between appointments, and ask questions about your condition, treatment, or exercises.

At Helping Hands Physiotherapy & Massage, our team is dedicated to providing personalized, evidence-based care in a comfortable and professional environment. We want every patient to feel confident and prepared for their treatment sessions.
